Janet Jackson 'Kindly Declined' Offer to Appear in 'Michael' Biopic, LaToya Jackson Reveals

HOLLYWOOD — Janet Jackson, the only Jackson sibling whose chart success rivals that of her late brother Michael, is notably absent from the new Michael biopic — and now we know why.

At the film's premiere Monday at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood, LaToya Jackson told Variety on the red carpet that her younger sister was asked to be depicted in the movie but turned down the opportunity.

"She was asked," LaToya said, "but she kindly declined."

LaToya added that audiences "have to respect her wishes," though she expressed her own disappointment. "I wish everybody was in the movie," she said.

Director Antoine Fuqua also addressed Janet's absence, telling the publication he "would love Janet to be there."

"I have so much respect and love for Janet, but it's OK," Fuqua said. "She's supportive of Jaafar [Jackson], and that's what matters."

Jaafar Jackson, the 29-year-old son of Jermaine Jackson, makes his feature film debut portraying his late uncle. The biopic traces Michael Jackson's life from early childhood to megastardom.

After multiple production delays, Michael is projected to open with $150 million at the global box office.

Janet Jackson, known for hits including "That's the Way Love Goes," has not publicly commented on her decision to decline participation in the film.

The Michael biopic is now playing in theaters worldwide.
