Robert Pattinson stepped into one of television’s most recognizable true-crime personas this week as A24 released the first trailer for Primetime in the U.S.

The teaser matters because it turns a controversial chapter of 2000s broadcast television into a prestige thriller, pairing Pattinson’s star power with A24’s reputation for uneasy, conversation-starting films.

In Primetime, Pattinson plays Chris Hansen, the former Dateline NBC correspondent known for hosting To Catch a Predator. The series followed hidden-camera sting operations involving adults who believed they were meeting minors, and it became one of the most debated nonfiction TV formats of its era.

A24’s official setup for the film is spare: “In 2006, To Catch a Predator host Chris Hansen sets out to make television history.” The trailer leans into that premise with a tense, polished tone rather than a straightforward biopic approach.

The cast also includes Merritt Wever, Skyler Gisondo, Matthew Maher, Bokeem Woodbine and Phoebe Bridgers. For Bridgers, the project marks her film acting debut after previously appearing as herself in A24’s I Saw the TV Glow.

The trailer’s biggest viral hook is Pattinson’s transformation. His version of Hansen is measured, clipped and camera-aware, suggesting the film will examine not only criminal investigations but also the machinery of televised confrontation.

That angle gives Primetime a timely edge. True-crime entertainment remains a major force across streaming and social media, but audiences have become more critical about how real cases are packaged, promoted and consumed. A film about To Catch a Predator arrives directly inside that debate.

Hansen has already reacted publicly, but carefully. In an Entertainment Weekly report citing his NewsNation appearance, Hansen said the filmmakers had reached out to him and that he had been asked not to discuss the project at length. He also described the trailer as “very dramatic.”

The original To Catch a Predator premiered in 2004 and became a national talking point during its NBC run. Its confrontational format drew huge attention while also raising questions about journalism, law enforcement cooperation and the ethics of turning sting operations into prime-time television.

For Pattinson, Primetime continues a post-Twilight career built on riskier choices. He has moved between studio franchises and filmmaker-driven projects, and this role gives him another character study shaped by public image, performance and moral ambiguity.

A24 has not announced a specific release date for Primetime. The film is currently expected in theaters this fall.
